A look inside my smashbook

I’ve showed you guys inside my scrapbook and my art journal before, but I thought today I’d show you my smashbook journal (if you want to see all four of my journals together and how I use them, I posted about that too!). Smashbooking is actually pretty big on Youtube right now, as well as instagram. The idea behind it is that it’s a very loose journal, with the idea being that you ‘smash’ anything and everything in to your book. It’s usually full of ephemera, like tickets and receipts, packaging and other loose paper bits you want to stick down. It can be full of lists, photographs, postcards and doodles, and can document your life in any way you want.

I don’t journal much in mine – if I do, it’s just a few words and the date, as I have my other journals to document my thoughts and feelings for that. This one is just a collection of paper and junk that I’m too much of a hoarder to throw away! I have boxes full of ‘nice’ things, and this is a journal that I can stick them into so I don’t have to chuck it in the bin. It’s the journal that I don’t have to think about, and still be creative. I just grab my box of things and get sticking, sometimes with a theme or an event in mind, but generally just picking out things that work together and gluing them down.

It’s a great way for me to empty out the clutter I tend to keep, and have it all organised in a book that makes me happy to flick through. It reminds me of my childhood – of keeping a scrapbook in the loosest form of the word, and not like the 12 x12 scrapbook that I keep now. I love that I can keep little memories of tags and tickets and stick it in a book that is fun to create as well as look through.

You can buy ‘smashbooks’ ready-made – they generally come with various papers throughout and a glue pen, but you honestly don’t need to buy one. Just grab an empty book (generally spiral bound ones are the best so you don’t have to worry about the thickness of your pages) and get collecting and sticking!

Do you keep a smashbook? I love seeing other peoples journals, so if you've posted about yours, I'd love to see a link in the comments!
